The film Bedevilled is inspired by the silent film ‘Alraune’ by Henrik Galeen (1927). 

The original film concentrates on the issues of artificial insemination and individuality: genetics versus environment. A scientist, Professor Jakob ten Brinken, interested in the laws of heredity, impregnates a prostitute in a laboratory with the semen of a hanged murderer. The prostitute conceives a female child who has no concept of love, whom the professor adopts. The girl, Alraune, suffers from obsessive sexuality and perverse relationships throughout her life. She learns of her unnatural origins and she avenges herself against the professor. 

In this adaption most of the story is discarded, the film focusses on the relation between the man (the Professor) and the woman (Alraune), their movements in space and the sexual tension between the two characters. The new film reaches a level of abstraction that the original did not posses, but the question of morality remains as strong as before: Who is to be blamed for this dysfunctional relationship, is it the man or the woman? 

Bedevilled is a tribute to the magnificence and modernity of silent film but also an appropriation of the genre.

De film Bedevilled is geïnspireerd door de stomme film 'Alraune' van Henrik Galeen (1927).

In de originele film is kunstmatige inseminatie en individualiteit een belangrijk onderwerp; genetische manipulatie tegenover natuur. Een wetenschapper, Professor Jakob ten Brinken, die geïnteresseerd is in de wetten van de erfelijkheid, insimineert het zaad van een gehangene bij een prostituee. Zij krijgt een dochter die niet kan liefhebben, de professor adopteert haar. Het meisje, Alraune, leidt onder compulsieve sexualiteit en scheefgroeiende relaties. Uiteindelijk ontdekt zij haar afkomst en wreekt zich op de professor.

In de bewerking is dit verhaal vrijwel naar de achtergrond verdwenen, de film focust op de relatie tussen de man (de Professor) en de vrouw (Alraune), hun bewegingen in de ruimte en de sexuele spanning tussen de twee karakters. Deze nieuwe versie heeft een veel groter abstractie nivo dan het origineel, maar de kwestie rond onze moraliteit blijft overeind: Wie treft schuld voor deze onmogelijke relatie, is het de man of de vrouw?

Bedevilled is een hommage aan de grootsheid en moderniteit van de stomme film, maar ook een toeëigening van het genre.
